Here are the current batch of Westie hopefuls of the future who have received a scholarship for the 2013 / 2014 season.

Tyla Nathan-Wong

Rugby

Gold

  • Helped the NZRU Women’s Sevens National Squad win Sevens World Cup 2013.

  • Youngest member of the “Touch Blacks” Womens team and youngest female representative to date at any Touch World Cup

Long term goals:

  • Team member of the Touch Blacks

  • To be selected for the Black Fern’s Womens Rugby Team by 2014 and compete at the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup in France

  • Compete for the Touch Blacks at the Touch World Cup Australia 2015

  • To be selected for the NZRU Women’s Sevens Team at Olympics 2016

Lewis Hollows

Rowing

  • North Island U21 Single Scull Champion 2012

  • NZ Rowing Championships – 2nd in U21

  • Double Scull, U21 Coxless Quad, U21 Coxed Eight.

  • U21 Australasian Youth Cup Champion in single, coxless quad and the coxed eight.

Goals:

  • Defend his Trans Tasman singles titles

  • To make the U23 Team and compete in Europe

  • Gain selection to Olympic 2016 Team

Elliot Paerata-Reid

Surfing

  • Current U18 National Champion

  • 2nd U/16 NZ Nationals

  • Former King of the Groms

  • Winner of this year’s New Zealand Ripcurl Gromsearch

  • New Zealand secondary school champion

Long term goals:

  • To consistently be in the top ten surfers in the world

Benedict Chong Wong
Shot put
Silver

  • Ranked worlds 5th best U18 Shot putter

  • 2013 U18 National Champion

  • Personal best of 18.94m

  • New Zealand Secondary schools champion

  • Represented New Zealand and World Youth Games in Ukraine

Goals:

  • Short term goal is to throw 20m

Michael Mincham
Swimming

Silver

  • New Zealand Swimming’s 1500 freestyle champion

  • Previously held the 1500m long course record at 14, 15 and 16 years old

  • 1500m short course record at 14 and 15 years old

  • At 14 also, he held the New Zealand long course records over 800m, 400m and 200m.

Goals:

  • Perform well at World Junior Championships in Dubai

  • 2014 Commonwealth Games

Danielle Sutherland

Hockey

  • Bronze Medalist Youth Olympics 2010

  • NZ U21 Squad

  • Member of Auckland Hockeys Regional Talent team being developed for senior blacksticks

  • Winner of National U21 Tournament

  • Auckland NHL Team

Long term goals

  • Become a Black Stick and attend the next Olympic Games

Elizabeth Cui

Diving

Bronze

  • Gold medallist at the Diving New Zealand National Championships for age groups 1m, 3m and platform
  • Open women’s 1m and 3m champion
  • Named to be a member of the 2012 DNZ team to attend the World Junior Championships for 1m and 3m springboard.

Long term goals:

  • Compete as a member of the DNZ National Team at the Youth Olympic Games in China 2014, Commonwealth Games 2018 & 2022 and the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020.
Thomas Kingsmill
Waterpolo

Bronze

  • New Zealand Mens Waterpolo 2011 through 2013

  • National U18 Rep 2011 and 2012 (Ranked 10th)

  • 2012 ASB Sportsperson of the Year

  • Competed at 2013 World Championships in Spain

Goals:

  • Continue to play for New Zealand

  • Qualify for 2014 Commonwealth Games

Taylor Mathews
Javelin

  • PB of 61.48 metres

  • 2011 North Island and the Western Zone Junior Boys Champion

Daniel Mettam

Motorbike racing

  • Auckland 250 cc Champion 2012

  • Winner of Hyosung Cup 2012 and 2013

  • NZ #2, 125 GP Class 2012

  • Holder of 4 NZ lap records at North Island tracks

Goals

  • NZ 600cc Champion by age 19

  • Race professionally in Europe or America by 21

Brahm Richards
Wrestling

Bronze

  • New Zealand Champion in Judo and Wrestling since 2008

  • Gold Australasian Champs 2010 and 2012

  • Silver at Oceania Championships

  • Numerous golds in New Zealand and US Competition

Goals:

  • Make New Zealand wrestling team to compete in the USA next year

Logan van Gils

Judo

Bronze

  • Represented New Zealand Judo at the 2012 Oceania Judo Championships winning Gold Cadets -66Kg

  • Cadets -66kg Gold and Open Weight Gold at the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Open Judo Championships

  • NZ National Championships Cadets -66kg Gold, Junior Men -66 kg Silver

Goals:

  • Increase New Zealand ranking to number 1 for Junior Mens Division

Adel van der Walt
Judo

Bronze

  • New Zealand’s 2nd ranked junior woman Judoka

  • New Zealand’s 2nd ranked senior woman Judoka

  • Ranked 32nd in World among senior women

  • Silver medal for both junior and senior women at Oceania
    Judo Union (OJU) championship

Goals:

  • 2014 Commonwealth Games
