2022 TRAINING GRANT

James Price

Fencing

Since receiving a 2022 scholarship fencer James Price justified his selection to represent New Zealand by helping the New Zealand team to win the U20 Australian Nationals in Melbourne. This major upset marked only the second time a New Zealand team has managed this feat and became the youngest team (all only 17) to ever do so. Individually James placed 10th.

This was the prelude to the even more meritorious achievement of lifting his U20 world ranking by 241 places.  He went into the U20 Asian Fencing Championships at Tashkent, ranked 286th and after a strong showing including three wins against world class opposition, finished the tournament ranked 45th.   This made him this country’s top U20 swordsman.

James earned the right to represent New Zealand by late 2022, with strong finishes at the 2022 Fencing Commonwealth Games (U17's, 12th place finish) and the Open Men's Oceania.

These are results which should set him up nicely for the U20 Oceania Fencing Champs in Dunedin on 2nd July.
