Cameron Gray - Swimmer
2022 Gold Award Recipient
Since receiving the Don Oliver Scholarship at the end of 2022, I went across to Melbourne in December to compete at the 2022 World Quatics Short Course Swimming Champs. This event was a user pays event where I used generous donations from the Don Oliver Foundation to fund this trip.
Here I placed 18th individually in the men's 50m Backstroke, 7th in the 4x50m mixed freestyle relay, and broke the NZ open record in the 50m freestyle.
In April 2023 I raced at the New Zealand Open Champs, where I landed myself on this year's world championships team again in the 50 fly by equalling my commonwealth games time and dropping 1.5 seconds in the 100m freestyle and breaking the New Zealand record to go under the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifying mark. However, this was not a qualification meet so I will need to replicate this swim next year at the Olympic trials. In July I am flying to Japan for the World Championships to compete against the best in the sport.
I am incredibly grateful for the support the Don Oliver Foundation has provided me with and I am excited to see where my sport can take me!
