Tyla Nathan-Wong - NZ Claims second women's sevens series win

    May 19, 2014

New Zealand have made it two from two in the IRB Women's Sevens World Series after winning the Amsterdam Sevens final this morning.

The 29-12 final victory over Australia was winner takes all, and New Zealand came through huge with a stunning display in the final.

Constant brilliance from Tyla Nathan-Wong and Sarah Goss at the restart proved key to the victory, with Nathan-Wong's high kickoff repeatedly plucked out of the air by Goss, setting New Zealand up for easy tries.

It was Australian star Emilee Cherry who opened the scoring, crossing after only a minute for an early 5-0 lead.

The Australians seemed intent on defending the slim margin, and were simply brilliant on defence for much of the first half, as New Zealand struggled to get past the halfway line.

When they eventually did after six minutes, Shiray Tane streaked up the right wing to tie things up, and then it was the Goss and Nathan-Wong show.

Goss won the high kickoff, fed the ball inside, and within moments Kayla McAlister was in after breaking through the stiff Australian defence with a massive step.

Then it was the Goss and Nathan-Wong show, again.

Goss claimed another kickoff, fed the ball inside, and Carla Hohepa has space to run up the left wing for another try.

Deja vu had only just begun, as Goss claimed another restart as halftime approached, but this time Tane was stopped just short of the line by the outstanding Cherry, preventing an even larger lead at the break.
