Steph McKenzie - it is now crunch time
The Oceania Track Championships are just one week away and the importance of the event cannot be overstressed. With potential World Championship places up for grabs New Zealand has fielded a strong squad for the event; amongst them is Kiwi sprint ace Steph McKenzie.
Steph has a busy schedule lined up. Her ability over the short distances - that was clear for all to see at the Commonwealth Games and at the BikeNZ Classic/Cup - has led to her filling her schedule in Adelaide as McKenzie and the team look ahead to a significant period in the track cycling season. “In Adelaide I am racing all sprint events which includes, team sprint (with Katie [Schofield]), 500m time trial, individual sprints and Keirin so it will be again another hectic schedule similar to our Elite track championships.”
Steph’s last race, at the BikeNZ Classic/Cup saw her come away with a lot of positives from the weekend. But as she explains, the positives came out from an initial place of uncertainty going into the event at the Avantidrome. “I was not sure about my form going into racing last weekend, I sure didn’t feel like I had form during racing but now I have come away from that weekend with more trust in my coach and more self-belief,” Steph said. “Racing on the other hand was fun as I was able to try new things and make the racing hard, it was a really good training stimulus heading into Adelaide.”
